Moving Home Checklist

The key rule to moving home is don't leave everything until the last moment. Delays in departure can be costly.  As soon as you know you are definitely moving start planning.  The date of your move is dictated by the contract completion date. It is worth planning well in advance for this date, as removal firms and cleaners can be hard to come by at short notice on the days you require.

If you are paid monthly try to arrange the move so that you move in to your new home the day after your normal pay-day. Most lenders will arrange a direct debit one calendar month after the day you take possession of the keys so ensuring you have funds left at the end of a very busy month will easy some of the financial worries moving entails. Consider moving during school holidays, which allows the kids to get used to an area before starting a new school.
Arrange a removals firm within your budget. Alternatively if you are physically fit to move furniture and have some friends available to help with of course a suitable van then why not do it yourself ? See our List of Removals Firms or check the Greenock Telegraph for self-employed van-drivers.
If you can afford a bridging loan you can arrange to purchase your new home on a Friday and sell your old home on the Monday. Moving over a weekend will give you a little more breathing space.
Contact your Gas, Electricity and Telephone and check the procedures for letting them know you have moved.
Prepare preprinted letters giving your old address and your new address. Leave the address blank and you can handwrite in the names and addresses of everyone you need to inform about your move. If you do this in time mail wont go missing. Consider additionally registering with one of the online notification services such as www.ihavemoved.com.
Ask for mail-redirection at the post-office. This is an excellent service for a nominal fee. Well worth the bother!
Over the weeks before your move collect boxes and packing material from supermarkets (generally free). Of course since you have followed the plan and visited your new home one extra time to take measurements you will have a rough idea where everything will go. Package non-essential items like ornaments / books up in advance. marking the box with a label.
On the day of the move itself - one key rule - start early ! Start with a good breakfast. Even if you are not doing the move yourself directing the movements can be tiring as there is so much to do. Since you cannot be in two places at one time you will need to arrange a friend or your partner to be at the new house to await the arrival of your furniture and possessions.
After moving all your possessions return for one final check just in case you missed something.
Take the Electricity reading and Gas reading and make a note of the numbers. Leave a copy for the new owner. Turn off the power. Lock the windows and doors and wave goodbye !
